Is A Roof Coating The Same Thing As Weatherproofing?

commercial roofing waterproof vs coating

Not all roof coatings are designed to be weatherproof; some are just reflective, protecting the roof against UV radiation and maintaining a nice indoor thermal comfort.

Weatherproofing, on the other side, suppose the application of a fully reinforced layer that provides the roof the strength to seams, blisters, splits, as well as the contraction and expansion stresses. Roof coatings that are not reinforced are more than 8 times weaker than reinforced systems. Although both of the Parker roofing solutions protect the roof`s integrity and structure in their own way, weatherproofing can work as a standalone roof system; reflective coatings cannot.

Weatherproofing a flat roof can be performed in three ways, depending on your budget, the size of the roof and other factors:

Using reinforced bitumen membranes (laying down 2-3 layers of the material, bonding everything together by hot bitumen and combine the coating with a polyester carrier)

Using liquid waterproofing such as glass reinforced plastic that uses rigid polyester resin combined with glass fiber reinforcement. Fleece liquid membranes are a version of liquid waterproofing, featuring liquid resin and fleece reinforcement. Other systems commonly applied are acrylic, polyurethane and flexible polyester systems that are rather used in the roof repair/ maintenance process, because they are not always reinforced.
